Welcome to the NIHR CLAHRC for Leeds, York and Bradford web site. The CLAHRC brings together researchers from two local universities with staff in the NHS and Social Services to translate research into clinical practice more effectively. This exciting initiative is funded by the National Institute for Health Research and our local partner organisations.

You need Flash and JavaScript enabled to view this videoYou need Flash and JavaScript enabled to view this videoTRANSCRIPT OF INTRODUCTION BY SIMON MORRITTMy name is Simon Morritt and I am Chief Executive of NHS Bradford and Airedale, and Chairman of the Leeds, York and Bradford CLAHRC Board.CLAHRCs, or Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care, are innovative partnerships established to undertake high quality research focused on the needs of patients. It aims to bridge the gap between research and practice, by translating academic research, conducted in universities, to the actions of front line health and social care staff.There are nine CLAHRCs across the country with funding for five years until September 2013.The CLAHRC for Leeds, York and Bradford has twelve partners working on an impressive range of projects.

These include:

The design of a Clinical Information and Management System for collecting stroke outcomes data which can then be used to improve stroke care.

Seeking effective interventions to improve life of alcohol and drug misusers.

Working to develop research calibre information systems to improve maternal and child health.

And finally, identifying people at high risk of vascular events who'd benefit from preventative or rehabilitative intervention.

The CLAHRC's success is entirely dependent on making sure research knowledge is really used, this means people in front line services changing the way they do their jobs, and commissioners ensuring that the services they commission reflect the best available research evidence.We want to make sure all this great work and the stronger connections we've made between university researchers and front line staff really does make a difference for patients in the future.Thank you very much.

The CLAHRC is a new initiative designed to ”bridge the gap” between health research and clinical practice. The key aim of the CLAHRCs is to ensure the effective application of research outcomes and to build capacity and capability within the NHS to conduct high quality applied health research.

There are nine CLAHRCs across the country bringing together partners in the NHS, Universities, City Councils and other key organisations to work in partnership to address this translation gap.
